Are you getting enough sleep?

According to Sleep.org 30% of Americans are sleeping 6 hours or less a night. Even though it is suggested that after the age of 18, 7 hours should be the minimum. Most people fail to see the importance of sufficient sleep in their day to day life. Inconsistent sleep cycles can lead to a plethora of health problems that most of us do not even know are being cause by lack of rest. Sleep related disorders are not just limited to physical disorders like heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure, but can also affect the brains ability to function, such as decision making, attention span and memory.

How Much Is Enough?

What is considered enough will be different from person to person, depending on the individual’s age and lifestyle. A few questions to ask yourself if you are concerned are:

  • Is caffeine how you make it through your day??
  • Do you catch yourself over sleeping on your days off?
  • Do you find yourself feeling drowsy while driving?

If you find yourself answering yes to any of the questions above you could be suffering from early symptoms of insufficient sleep syndrome.

The key factor to getting adequate sleep every night is for each individual to work with their own cycle. There are actually 4 stages to the sleep cycle: N1 or transition-sleep, N2 or light-sleep, N3 or deep-sleep, and REM(rapid eye movement) or dream sleep. Experiencing all 4 types is important when finding ones proper cycle.

How can I get adequate rest?

Getting into a good evening routine is an easy way to make sure you are getting adequate rest every night. This includes falling asleep around the same time every night or finding a process of winding down that will help your body prepare to go to bed.
